On Feb. 11, 2011,  Karen Cothren left this world to be with the Lord she so dearly loved.   I only came to know Karen less than two years ago. Funny how you can "know" some people for years and years and even see them every day, but they rarely affect your life and often do nothing to enrich or inspire you.  Karen was one of those people who enriched and inspired all who passed her way in just one meeting.
Although she never came with us to Guatemala, she somehow believed in our work. She always followed my blogs and emails and soon became one of our greatest contributors in so many ways.  Always apologizing that she wished she had the financial means to make huge contributions, she was so cognizant that real change comes from the Lord above and that we are only His hands. Yet, she gave so generously and so from her heart. She recognized that she and her sister were among the wealthiest people on earth in terms of their spirit, soul and faith.
Karen would send me inspiring messages almost daily.  She seemed to know exactly what verse to send or what words to say that would keep me encouraged and fortified when challenges came along.  She and her sister, Veela, would always remind me that they were "two pairs of praying lips for you, your team and your work in Christ's name."
I always felt so humbled by Karen.  Many of us contribute our "left-overs" to the Lord.  Karen was one of those who gave her "first-fruits".  It is because of people like Karen that all of us take this work so seriously. We know that so many sacrifice for those in the most need and so we see this work as truly from our most-loving God.
I will personally never forget Karen.  Her life, her words and her example will continue to inspire and encourage me and bring me closer to that perfection that is Christ.

Sandy and I met Karen Cothren at Anne and Randy’s Christmas party. We had been there a couple hours, it was getting late and we were ready to leave for home when Anne encouaraged us to stay just a bit longer. That’s when we had the good fortune to meet Karen and her sister, Veela. The rest of the evening we were entertained and uplifted with stories of Karen’s lfe experiences, testamonies to her faith and a remarkable knowledge of biblical passages and their significance. Her work in a synagog in Los Angeles provided her an interesting viewpoint on Chistianity and Christians. I was shocked to hear of her passing and regret that i only had the one meeting with her. I’m sure that she has touched many hearts during her life, I know she touched mine. I would like to express my symapathy to her family for their loss. I would like to also thank Karen for all that she taught me.

I also first met Karen that night at our Christmas party, although I had been in touch with her by e-mail before. One of the things I most remember from that Christmas party, besides the wonderful conversation we had after the party had winded down and that Gary spoke of, was that Karen and Veela were dressed "to the nines" and absolutely lit up the room with their beauty, words, and faith. I felt honored and humbled that two such beautiful ladies had graced our party and were speaking so strongly about their lives and faith. I truly wish the evening could have continued, but unfortunately we can't control time.

Karen's passing was a tremendous shock to everyone. Pastor Paul's eulogy at the memorial service was a wonderful testimony to Karen, her faith, and her ability to touch everyone she met. I know she is with the Lord now, dressed to the nines in the finest of heavenly garments and entertaining the Lord with her wonderful stories and wit.

Thank you Karen for all that you have done for me and SewHope. You are a blessing to all of us in so many ways.

My husband Paul hired Karen for the executive assistant position at St. Paul's. The moment I met her we became friends. She was an encourager, trusted confidante, and a true follower of Jesus Christ. She loved to laugh and her smile could overcome any dark cloud. She showed me what it means to live a Christ-like life.

I've been "wrestling" with God over why He allowed her to die when her friendship and ministry was so vital to so many. Veela, when trying to console me said that Karen showed us the way and now it's our turn to take over where she left off. Maybe that is the reason. God knew many of us would be content letting Karen do what needed to be done. Now that we have experienced such a loss, we know what a difference she made in our lives and if we follow her example, what a difference we can make in other people's lives. One could not encounter Karen and not be changed in a positive way. She loved the Lord with all her heart and soul and shared that love with all who crossed her path.

I found this quote by Douglas M. Lawson, that I feel applies to how Karen lived her life. It says "Each of us will one day be judged by our standard of life - not our standard of living; by our measure of giving - not our measure of wealth; by our simple goodness - not our seeming greatness."

I find comfort in knowing that Karen is with our Lord and I will meet up with her again and we will laugh and love and enjoy eternal life together. For now I miss her.

You are now resting in peace my dear friend and sister in Christ. I will never forget you.

In Christ's love,

Carol
