SewHope has sent one million nutritious meals to Guatemala!
Kids Against Hunger Food Assistance
Unfortunately, there continues to be a tremendous amount of hunger and malnutrition throughout the communities where we work. While our family and community gardens have grown and are helping to meet some of this need, they are not yet sufficient to fully address the ongoing crisis. Therefore, SewHope continues to provide Kids Coalition Against Hunger nutritious meals to those most vulnerable to the effects of malnutrition — children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and the poorest families. We realize this assistance is not a permanent solution; our ultimate goal is to help Guatemalans become fully food sufficient while addressing the urgent, immediate hunger needs. Kids Coalition Against Hunger is a nonprofit humanitarian food aid organization based in Omaha, Nebraska, whose mission is to significantly reduce the number of starving children around the world. Their meals are packaged in the U.S. by civic groups, churches, schools, and other organizations, and provide a rich source of protein, carbohydrates, vegetables, minerals, and vitamins. The food is both nutritious and flavorful, and is well received by the Guatemalan communities we serve. SewHope partners with a KCAH affiliate based in Detroit, Michigan, which has provided us with an extraordinary 1 million meals to date. This partnership began in 2009, when a small group of people from Toledo, Ohio joined with SewHope to establish a local satellite of Kids Coalition Against Hunger. Their goal was to obtain highly nutritious food that could be shipped to malnourished children in the villages of Guatemala where SewHope was already working. Those involved in the work of SewHope recognized the urgent and immediate need for adequate nutrition for these children. While we fully understand that the long-term solution to malnutrition is complex and involves far more than these meals alone, this program continues to address the emergency needs, giving children the nourishment they need not just to survive, but to thrive. The KCAH meals provide a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates, and essential vitamins and minerals needed by a malnourished child's body and mind. The meals offer all nine of the essential amino acids required for complete nutrition — something that cannot be said of typical food relief sources such as rice or beans alone. The food is easy to store, simple to package, and can be prepared quickly using only boiling water. |
