After spending six weeks in the USA, I have returned for another year with the wonderful people of the Peten, Guatemala. I arrived last evening and was already back to work today. So many wonderful things have happened in the past six weeks! I want to share some of what I saw and did today.
I continued on to the primary school in Purushila where once again I was overwhelmed with hugs. I met with Kevin, the director, in the computer lab. The door go the computer cupboard is in place and the teachers continued with the computer classes in my absence! I spoke with Kevin about the possibility of using this classroom for the English and math classes, for tutoring, for the library and perhaps even for the pre-school for infants to four-year-olds. He agreed to these ideas. I am very eager to get started with these projects.
Although I do not yet have a picture, we need your prayers for a little girl named Darlene. Orfe and Rudy took the mother and Darlene to the hospital today. Darlene, who is now 18 months old, was born with part of her intestine outside of her body. In a developed country, a problem like this would be taken care of before the baby ever left the hospital. Rudy can arrange for the surgery to be done, but there are other problems that need to be overcome. Darlene is very undernourished and she needs to get stronger before the surgery can be done. The mother is very reluctant and fearful to take her daughter to the nutrition center where the baby would be left for about three months. The mother is also very shy and needs assistance to advocate for herself and her daughter. We need prayers, please!
All in all, it is GREAT to be back!
