Kids Against Hunger - Toledo Region

                                                      Picture
Kids Against Hunger is a nonprofit humanitarian food aid organization whose mission it is to significantly reduce the number of starving children around he world.
In 2009, a small group of people from Toledo, Ohio joined with SewHope to start a local satellite of Kids Against Hunger  in order to obtain nutritious food that could be shipped to the malnourished children in the villages of Guatemala that we are working in.  Those involved in the work of SewHope saw an emergency need for adequate nutrition for the chldren in this region.  While we realize that a long term solution to solving the problem of malnutrition is complex and involves much more than these meals, we see that this program is clearly addressing the immediate need and allowing children not just to survive, but to thrive.
KAH meals provide a rich source of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates, and vitamins needed by a malnourished child's body and mind. The food is well accepted by the communities we work in
and the  meals offer all nine of the essential amino acids required for complete nutrition - something that can't be said about other typical food relief sources such as rice or beans alone. The food is easy to package and store and easily prepared using only boiling water.

Ottawa Hills High School packs 10,000 meals for Guatemala! See photos below...

KAH sends its second shipment of food to Guatemala in April, 2011 - 380,000 meals total!

                                                      Picture

Through the great efforts of all the generous KAH contributors, KAH sent it's second shipment of food to Guatemala for a total of 380,000 meals! The food is being distributed among 8 of the poorest schools in the region as well as to families in extreme need.

SewHope and KAH team up to help the thousands of starving after a natural disaster in Guatemala City

                                                      Picture

SewHope and KAH were proud to be able to present the mayor or Santa Ana, Peten with 50,000 meals to send to the starving people in Guatemala City after a natural disaster struck this spring leaving thousands of people homeless.  Here our project coordinator, Ismael Martinez, is documenting the contribution to the government.

The vitamin formula is a proprietary formula and is the "secret sauce" that goes into our food. It includes 21 vitamins and minerals, and each bag of our food contains six servings of the dehydrated food which when boiled will feed six children. According to the food scientists developing the food, it supplies the optimum amount of nutrition for a malnourished child. It provides not just a meal, but better health to starving children. Additionally, our bags are specifically made from moisture-proof and odor-proof material to prevent spoilage and insect or rodent problems. The food bags are also three-ply for strength. Kids Against Hunger's life-saving meals have a shelf life of at least three years.
