PUBLIC HEALTH AND AGRICULTURE PROGRAMS
Equipping communities with the tools and knowledge they need to build a sustainable future and end the cycle of poverty is the ultimate goal of SewHope's public health and agricultural programs. SewHope students are given the opportunity to learn, hands-on, about raising chickens and growing and harvesting food. Their parents are given the tools needed to be able to create sustainable ways to provide for their families.
Chispa StovesWe work with families to install safe, high efficiency, low emissions stoves with chimneys that decrease indoor air pollution and prevent burns, save families hundreds of dollars a year on wood costs, and help deforestation. In 2023, 20 families had these safe stoves installed in their homes, and dozens more will be installed in 2024.

Eco FiltersOne of the best ways to improve health is to have a reliable source of clean water for drinking and sanitation. We help meet that need by providing simple ceramic and microfiber water filters to individual families. In the last two years, over 50 water filters have helped provide families with clean drinking water.

Poultry RaisingIn addition to the chickens SewHope raises on campus, many are raised by mothers of the children in our school. Our staff guides them in how to care for the chickens with the goal to be able to raise poultry, on their own, long term and provide for their families. Over 500 chickens were raised in 2023, all which to helped families earn an income.

Tilapia FarmingTilapia is an extremely popular, highly nutritious protein source used in school snacks that also helps provide supplemental income for SewHope's other agricultural projects. Each year, 1000-2000 tilapia are raised and the program continues to grow.

At-Home InitiativesSewHope staff work with families to develop vegetable gardens (cilantro, onions, radishes, tomatoes, peppers, etc.) and raise poultry for meat and eggs at their homes.
|
Mothers Cooperative ProgramSewHope mothers meet weekly with SewHope's Director of Community Development to learn about financial management that can lead to independence. They learn different ways to make money, budget, and save. The women currently make tamales to sell at SewHope's clinic.
